Gary Player Golf Course
One of the keynote features of Zimbali Lakes Resort will be the addition of a second signature, championship golf course – designed by golfing legend Gary Player. This 18 hole, signature championship golf course, with layout and design having been already finalised, will make extensive use of the dramatic existing terrain and will offer significant elevation changes throughout, providing for stunning vistas between t-boxes and greens. Furthermore, a state-of-the art driving range and golfing academy will add a full service golfing experience to what is the first Gary Player Signature Design project on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
The design philosophy that is to be employed for the Zimbali Lakes Resort Gary Player Golf Course is a blend of traditional design principals and modern technology, with a strong emphasis on the enjoyment of the stunning views that the estate has to offer, creating a course that exemplifies natural beauty in harmony with this challenging, undulating terrain.
About Gary Player Signature Design
Gary Player Signature Design has been in existence since the early 1980’s and collectively the team has designed some forty premier golf courses throughout the United States and over three hundred golf courses worldwide. The Zimbali Lakes Resort site brings some interesting challenges to the design and construction teams as the areas surrounding the course have largely been designated as wetlands. Development of this course will involve extensive earthworks in conjunction with conservation planning and indigenous planting to prevent erosion during the construction phase and afterwards. A characteristic of Gary Player Signature Design is the utilisation of the existing topography to determine the layout of the course and the preservation of the natural environment as far as possible.
The Zimbali Lakes Resort Gary Player Signature Golf Course will take approximately 18 months to complete once construction begins, which is anticipated to take place in 2009. Player is personally involved in every phase of the project and his name, logo, signature and likeness are to be linked to the course on completion. He will also be visiting the site, designing and implementing the plans and will personally attend the Ground Breaking and Grand Opening.
